Wall Street broker Billy Crocker stows away on the SS American to win over debutante Hope Harcourt, despite her engagement to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Along the way, he teams up with Reno Sweeney, a nightclub singer, and Moonface Martin, a disguised gangster. Reno, initially upset about Billy's rejection, later helps him pursue Hope while finding herself drawn to Evelyn. Through a series of comedic mishaps, Billy is mistaken for Public Enemy No. 1, leading to hilarity before his true identity is revealed.
